CELTIC THUNDER - 'GEORGE' ON CD & DVD
Celtic Thunder fans, “Thunderheads” as they are affectionately known, took great joy in watching George perform his signature solos within each of the Celtic Thunder shows. This DVD highlights those moments that his fans loved so much. From proudly singing his lead line in the Scottish anthem “Caledonia” to his poignant performance of “The Old Man” and “My Boy”, George’s performances oozed charisma, always meeting the mark and connecting with his audience. His song choices throughout all of the Celtic Thunder shows follow a common theme. They are a reflection of a man’s passage through life, covering the most important themes that we associate with our journey through adulthood; Love and commitment “Life With You” and “The Voyage”; Career “Working Man” and “Yesterday’s Men”; Loss of a parent “The Old Man”; Relationship with one’s children “My Boy” and “Cat’s In The Cradle”; Aging “Gold and Silver Days” and “Life In The Old Dog Yet” and patriotism in “Skye Boat Song” and “Caledonia”.
We wrap up the DVD to George back in Dublin at The Helix with Mythology and we meet Colm who had recently joined Celtic Thunder. We see a very happy and relaxed George singing "The Grand Affaire" and "Scarlet Ribbon" and there’s no doubt who the big smile and the wink is for, sorry if you thought it was for you, his biggest fans Carolyn and Sarah were in their usual seats in the front row. We could not leave the next song out, "Life Without You" it’s a big number sung so passionately by the Big Man. The DVD finishes with "Unseen Footage" which was edited from the footage that our very own Angie has filmed while on tour with the guys. In all the DVD features 23 tracks that highlight just what a special part of Celtic Thunder that George was. It has been difficult to put the CD & DVD together, so many memories flooding in, but we are really happy with the end result and know that George would have approved.

Hello CT Fans,
Colm has decided to take a year out from touring with CT and complete his education to become a teacher. He will be be back but we are happy he is returning to his studies for a while. He has already completed his University degree but needs to do another year to qualify as a teacher.
As you all know I believe being an Artist is great and fun but not at the expense of a proper education so where I know Colm will be missed, I am delighted he is doing this, as are his family.

In Ireland children carved out potatoes or turnips as “Jack-O-Lanterns” and lighted them from the inside with candles. The practice originated from an Irish myth about a man nicknamed “Stingy Jack” who invited the Devil to have a drink with him and then didn’t want to pay for his drink.

Halloween’s origins date back to the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced sow-in). The Celts, who lived 2,000 years ago in the area that is now Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France, celebrated their new year on November 1. This day marked the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter.

Brian Boru was the last king of Ireland and is said to have been born around 940-950 in Thomond, now known as County Clare, to his mother Bé Binn and father, King Cennétig mac Lorcáin.
Brian’s mother was killed by Vikings when he was a child and being the youngest of two sons, Brian never became king until his father died, and then was succeeded by his older brother, Mathgamain. Mathgamain then died around 976 and this is when Brian became king, at around 30 years of age and was to soon begin his reign as the last High King of Ireland.
BRIAN BORU BECOMES KING OF MUNSTER
Brian Boru proceeded to battle with lesser kings in Ireland resulting in him ruling the whole of Munster; he then went on to conquer Leinster. Brian met with Mael Sechnaill II, the current High King of Ireland at the time, in 997-998 and between them they divided Ireland – Brian King of the North, and Mael Sechnaill the King of the South.
BECOMING HIGH KING OF IRELAND
In 1002, Mael Sechnaill II recognized Brian Boru as King of Ireland after he defeated the King of Dublin and the Norse Settlers, a feat that was almost impossible for any king to do. Mael knew that Boru was seen as a hero in his people’s eyes - he had brought Ireland back from its knees after the invasion of the Vikings, and he knew he was no competition to Brian Boru.
The Reign of Brian Boru as High King of Ireland began. The origin of this name ( ‘Brian of the Tributes’) came from the tributes he was given from minor rulers throughout Ireland and how he used these tributes (mostly money) to restore important structures such as monasteries and libraries which were ruined during the Viking Invasion, he even sent overseas for lost artifacts and books.
THE FINAL BATTLE FOR BRIAN BORU
The Battle of Clontarf, Dublin in 1014 proved to be an important era in Brian Boru’s reign. Once again the Vikings from Dublin started war with Brian Boru in Clontarf, along with the King of Leinster. Victory was Brian’s, however, it was to be short lived for him. As the enemy retreated at the Battle of Clontarf, one of the leaders, Bothair, came forward and murdered him. Boru was said to be around 90 years old when he died in the battle.

Did you know that Halloween first started in Ireland?
Samhain, the ancient Celtic Festival that we now call Halloween, originated in Co. Meath more than 2,000 years ago. Samhain marks the end of the old Celtic Year and the beginning of the New Year; the end of summer and the harvest and the beginning of the dark, cold winter, a time of year that was often associated with human death.
The Celts believed during this time of transition the veil between our world and the next came down, and the spirits of all who had died since the last Oíche Shamhna (Night of Samhain) moved on to the next life. On the night before the new year (October 31) the boundary between the worlds of the living and the dead became blurred and it was believed that the ghosts of the dead returned to earth.
One of the main spiritual centres of the ancient Celts was located on top of the hill of Tlachtga, now called the Hill of Ward, one mile east of Athboy, Co. Meath. The Druids felt that this world and the other world were closest at Tlachtga. It was here on the festival of Samhain that the sacred fire was kindled. It was custom of the Druids to assemble on Tlachtga on the eve of Samhain and that a fire was lit on which offerings were made. All the fires in Ireland were quenched on this night and the men of Ireland were forbidden to relight them except from the fire of Tlachtga.
The lighting of the scared fire was a solemn and weird ritual. This was the first day of winter and death was very close. The spirits of the dead returned and appeared to men. Torches were lit from this sacred fire and carried to seven other hills around the county including Tara and Loughcrew, and then on to light up the whole countryside.
From this ancient festival the roots of modern day Halloween were sown.

The island of Ireland is home to multitude of stunningly beautiful beaches along its 5,000km of coastline. There's uncrowded beaches for walking or swimming, enchanted beaches for dreaming, beaches for surfing, sandcastle building, rock pooling, kayaking, sunbathing and outdoor adventure – Ireland has it all.
But which one do you head for amid the amazing choice? Here's a quick guide on where to set up beach camp…
Trip Advisor’s readers' favorite Irish beaches are a great place to start, and Inchydoney in Clonakilty, County Cork, has topped its Readers' Choice Awards for two years in a row.
Inchydoney is blue flag peach of a beach with vast expanses of sand, dunes and excellent surfing conditions. At low tide the water can be almost 200 meters from the dunes. This beach prompted one reader to comment: “to walk along the beach in the warm Irish sunshine isn’t far short of wonderful.”
Four of the Trip Advisor Reader's Choice Top 10 Irish Beaches are in County Kerry, known as 'The Kingdom' to locals and travellers alike. The glorious, beautiful and unspoiled sandy stretches in the Kingdom include Derrynane, Inch Beach, Rossbeigh Beach and Banna Strand – all wonderful destinations in themselves, or amazing detours along the famous Wild Atlantic Way.
In the west of Ireland the advantage of Lahinch Beach in County Clare is not just the golden sands, but also the proximity of other Wild Atlantic Way attractions like the Cliffs of Moher and the Burren.
IRISH HISTORY - THE CELTS
The Celts were not the first inhabitants of Ireland. At the end of the Ice Age, as the climate became warmer in about 6,000 B.C., early immigrants probably crossed the narrow sea from Scotland to the Antrim coast and gradually moved further south.
The term Celtic denotes a group of Indo-European languages. But we transferred the name to the people who spoke these languages. Before 500 B.C. the Celts had come to be known in an area comprising Bavaria, Switzerland, Austria, Hungary and Bohemia. They spread over much of France and part of northern Italy in the sixth century before Christ, invaded northern Spain in the fifth century, sacking Rome at the end of the fourth century and getting a footing in Greece and Asia Minor in the third century. The Greeks called them Keltoi and the Romans Galli.
The Celts were not the first inhabitants of Ireland. At the end of the Ice Age, as the climate became warmer about 6,000 B.C., early immigrants probably crossed the narrow sea from Scotland to the Antrim coast and gradually moved further south. They lived a primitive existence by hunting in the forests and streams and lakes. Next came the first farmers who used stone implements for felling trees and preparing the soil for grain, they also kept large quantities of cattle, sheep and pigs. Perhaps by 2,000 B.C. a new group of settlers had arrived, metalworkers in search of gold and copper, who fashioned the artistic ornaments now in the National Museum in Dublin, the greatest collection of prehistoric gold objects in Western Europe. These were the dominant people in Ireland in the late Bronze Age when the Celts arrived.
The Celts had the advantage of having weapons made of iron. They seem to have moved into Ireland in two waves, one directly from the continent into the west of the country and the other through Britain into northeast Ireland. They may have begun to arrive as early as 500 B.C. and they were well established a century before Christ.
With their arrival a new era had begun in Ireland. The Picts in the north and other pre-Celtic peoples were overthrown. No doubt they still formed a strong element in the population but they became a part of the Celtic language and culture. The Celts dominated Ireland for nearly a thousand years.
